NORTH COVENTRY — West -Mont Christian Academy's elementary school was evacuated early this morning, before classes started, after an agitated individual came to the school, police and school officials said.
According to North Coventry Police Chief Robert Schurr, the individual came to the school to talk to a Kindergarten teacher and was escorted to the lobby by another teacher, who had to return to her class.
According to Dr. James Spock, when the teacher returned to check on the guest, he had disappeared. Fearing he might be roaming the building, school officials evacuated the students, who had yet to start classes, and immediately contacted police.
Police called in the Chesmont Emergency Response Team, who were in training today, and they cleared the building with the help of three K-9 officers.
The individual was not found and it was suspected he had left the building before police were contacted, officials said.
Warwick Child Care on East Cedarville Road was notified about the potential danger and was advised to go into lock down, Chief Schurr said.
School officials and police were going to be addressing parents about the incident.
